How to prepare for a newborn photography session at home

Welcoming a newborn into your family is a beautiful and emotional time, and capturing those first precious days with a professional photoshoot ensures you have timeless memories to cherish forever. My approach to newborn photography is simple and natural, focusing on the pure essence of your baby and the love surrounding them. To help you prepare, here are some easy tips to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

1. No Need to Prepare the Whole House

Your hands are already full, so please don’t stress about tidying every corner of your home! I will find a spot with the most flattering natural light, whether it’s near a window in the bedroom, living room, or nursery, sometimes it’s even the hallway or a corner in the kitchen. My goal is to create a serene and intimate setting where you and your baby feel comfortable, and the light is flattering.

2. Keep Outfits Light and Soft

For a timeless and cohesive look, I recommend wearing light and neutral tones such as white, grey, beige, soft blues, or gentle pinks. For the newborn, a simple vest or a soft sleep suit works best, rather than fussy or fancy clothing. This keeps them comfortable and ensures the focus remains on their delicate features. These colours complement the purity of a newborn and create a soft, dreamy feel in the images. The same goes for siblings—simple and comfortable outfits work best. Avoid bold patterns and bright colours, as they can be distracting in photographs.

3. Keep Your Baby Comfortable

Newborns are perfect just as they are, so there’s no need for elaborate outfits or props. A simple swaddle, a plain onesie, or even just their delicate skin is all that’s needed. Make sure the room is warm, so your baby stays cosy and relaxed.

4. Plan Around Baby’s Routine

I find that babies are happiest before noon, so scheduling your session in the morning can help ensure a calm and content baby. Newborn sessions are unhurried and flexible, allowing time for feeding, cuddles, and soothing. A well-fed and content baby is more likely to be settled during the session, so feel free to pause whenever needed. I work around your little one’s needs to keep everything relaxed and stress-free. I also keep the shoot short, Petite Family Story is around 30 minutes or so, so there’s no need for breaks. This ensures a pleasant experience for everyone without disrupting your routine.

5. Props – Keeping It Simple

I do not use props such as buckets or elaborate setups, as my focus is on capturing the natural beauty of your newborn and family. However, if you have a special blanket or a meaningful shawl, I would love to incorporate it into the session. These personal touches can add warmth and sentimental value to your photos.

6. Embrace the Moment

The beauty of an at-home newborn session is capturing your family’s genuine love and connection. Whether it’s snuggling on the sofa, gently cradling your baby by the window, or a quiet moment between siblings, these images will reflect your family’s unique bond. There’s no pressure for perfection—just love, warmth, and authenticity.

My goal is to provide you with timeless photographs that you’ll cherish for years to come. By following these simple tips, you can ensure a relaxed and beautiful experience that truly reflects this special time in your life.
